Ann<br />
<strong>Well</strong> I like it <strong>because</strong> it's <em>quite </em>quiet, <em>I prefer small towns </em>than big cities <em>in general</em>, <strong>and</strong> <em>particularly because </em>I've got kids <br />
<strong>so</strong> a small town is <em>better for kids</em>; <em>lots of places to walk </em>or <em>they've got the beach to play on or run around on</em>.<br />
<br />
Kyle<br />
I like it <strong>because</strong> it's <em>near the ocean</em>, they have a <em>wonderful</em> Paseo Maritimo, <br />
and <em>great places to go </em>and have pinchos in the Casco Viejo. <br />
It's a quiet town except during times of the fiestas that they have near the port. <br />
The sense of community the <em>people have a lot of pride in the community</em>, <br />
<em>lots of cultural activities </em>and <em>things that people can get involved in</em>.<br />
<br />
Stanners<br />
I <em>used to</em> live in San Ignacio <strong>so</strong> it's <em>a lot more colourful</em>, <br />
<strong>and of course </strong>like going for pinxos on Sunday morning, it's great<br />
and just that the buildings and the streets, <em>it's lovely walking home </em>from the metro <em>through the Casco Viejo</em>.<br />
<br />
Gary:<br />
It's 15, 20 minutes from Bilbao, there're three metros <strong>so</strong> <em>it's very easy to get from </em>Algorta <em>to </em>Bilbao and they come every 5 minutes, <em>that's brilliant</em>.<br />
<strong>also</strong> it's <em>right on the coast</em>, my house is 3 minutes from the beach.<br />
it's <em>relaxed, quiet, no problems</em>.....it's like a little village really<br />
<br />
Note: Ann lives in Plentzia, Kyle in Castro, Gary lived in Algorta (now Kiev) Stanners lived in Casco Viejo (now Prague)<br />
Many thanks to all!<br />
<br />
<br />
What's it like? <br />
<br />
What is there to do? What amenities are there? <br />
<br />
Where is it? How far to/from ..? Is it <em>easy to get to</em> and from where you work or study? <br />
<br />
Do you live <em>in</em> the centre, <em>on the outskirts</em>? <br />
<br />
Do you live <em>near</em> eg. the beach, the shops, the countryside, your friends?<br />
<br />
What's it like where you live eg. <em>quite</em> <em>quiet, noisy, relaxed, hectic</em>? <br />
<br />
How about the neighbours?<br />
<br />
Are there any general or particular reasons you like where you live?<br />
<br />
Are there any <em>places to go</em> eg. for walks, to take the children, to relax, hang out with friends?<br />
<br />
Are there<em> some good places for </em>pinxos, cafes, restaurants?<br />
<br />
Do people feel like they <em>belong</em> to your neigbourhood?<br />
<br />
Is it <em>lovely</em> walking around?<br />
<br />
What's the <em>nightlife</em> like?</span>rennjhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10451338840699771037noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1602010535109803953.post-78696508423409098122017-03-14T21:45:00.000+01:002017-03-29T21:48:45.235+02:00pisa topping<span style="font-size: xx-small;">(use of english: pt 3 word formation)</span><br />

I was out there on my own in a flat, and when things went wrong as they inevitably did, I had to call the workmen to sort it out. There were no other native English people to call on, so I was properly immersed. 1.<nobr><select name="q3_guess" size="1"> <option value="blank"></option><option value="0"> A</option><option value="1"> B</option><option value="2"> C</option><option value="3"> D</option><option value="4"> E</option><option value="5"> F</option><option value="6"> G</option></select></nobr>. <a href="javascript:expandcollapse('subtopic00subtopic101UNinterpreterreadingtxt')"><b> read on</b></a><span class="posthidden" id="subtopic00subtopic101UNinterpreterreadingtxt"><br />
<em>choose from A-H, there is one extra.</em><br />
A It was a blast – you learn lots about the world.<br />
B My husband came out to Geneva with me to look after her at that point.<br />
C It's always intense and it's often stressful, because these are communications that matter to people's lives so you have to get it right<br />
D I passed first time, which I wasn't expecting.<br />
E Working as an interpreter can sound like a glamorous life.<br />
F I never know what's next, and that's the fun of it.<br />
G I had to make friends, get stuck in and get over the embarrassment of making mistakes.<br />
<br />
After nine months my Russian was probably as good as it's ever been, and once I'd come home, it wasn't long before I saw that GCHQ were looking for linguists. The bare bones of it is that material will come in, either written or as audio, and you have to translate and transcribe it. (2).<nobr><select name="q3_guess" size="1"> <option value="blank"></option><option value="0"> A</option><option value="1"> B</option><option value="2"> C</option><option value="3"> D</option><option value="4"> E</option><option value="5"> F</option><option value="6"> G</option></select></nobr>. You also get to use your languages all day: even if something isn't of any intelligence value, you're always improving your skills.<br />
<br />
I'd taken a year out to do a masters in interpreting at the university of Bath, and then I did the UN interpreting test. It's renowned for being incredibly tough. (3).<nobr><select name="q3_guess" size="1"> <option value="blank"></option><option value="0"> A</option><option value="1"> B</option><option value="2"> C</option><option value="3"> D</option><option value="4"> E</option><option value="5"> F</option><option value="6"> G</option></select></nobr>. It meant that a whole new career opened up, working on UN missions abroad. I had to give it a go, so I took myself off to Geneva to see if anyone would book me.<br />
<br />
There aren't many of us interpreting from Russian to English, and I work from French as well. Interpreters work in pairs, doing half an hour before swapping over. (4).<nobr><select name="q3_guess" size="1"> <option value="blank"></option><option value="0"> A</option><option value="1"> B</option><option value="2"> C</option><option value="3"> D</option><option value="4"> E</option><option value="5"> F</option><option value="6"> G</option></select></nobr>. The aim is to be 100% accurate but often you can't translate literally, so it's about interpreting idea by idea. If I don't understand I try and hang back a bit, think about the context and try to pull together an idea that fits the situation. You have to think on your feet – I drink a lot of coffee.<br />
<br />
My working life four years on is, well, complicated! I have an 18-month-old daughter, and I started back at work when she was five months old. (5).<nobr><select name="q3_guess" size="1"> <option value="blank"></option><option value="0"> A</option><option value="1"> B</option><option value="2"> C</option><option value="3"> D</option><option value="4"> E</option><option value="5"> F</option><option value="6"> G</option></select></nobr>. We're back in Gloucestershire now, and I mostly try to arrange bookings so I'm away for a few days at a time. <br />
<br />
Fortunately it's well paid, and I aim to work 10 days in a month. Perhaps unsurprisingly, there are a lot of single interpreters, but for our family it works well – I like the flexibility of being freelance, I love the stimulation of the work and I like being able to have time at home with my daughter. Luckily, I've never liked planning too far ahead: in this job, my language skills have taken me to Bali, Nairobi, Vienna, around Europe, and I may soon be off to Copenhagen and Moscow. A.But when you think about it, was it simply because they didn’t have any great soccer left in them?<br />
B.Besides, a younger generation is waiting.<br />
C.They were led out by the police.<br />
D.It was a beautiful day for it with the sun shining brightly above.<br />
E.By the time the final minutes had ticked off the clock Wednesday, tens of thousands had joined in<br />
F.Maybe Spain saw it coming; maybe it didn’t.<br />
G.No past World Cup defending champion had been knocked out of the tournament so quickly.<br />
H.It all happened so fast<br />
<br />
Watching Chile’s 2-0 victory unfold was like seeing a prizefighter hit in the face again and again, then seeing him fall to the canvas and struggle to rise as the referee counts to 10. There’s a sense of pity in seeing a legend fall so unexpectedly, and appear so helpless.<br />
<br />
3.<nobr><select name="q3_guess" size="1"> <option value="blank"></option><option value="0"> A</option><option value="1"> B</option><option value="2"> C</option><option value="3"> D</option><option value="4"> E</option><option value="5"> F</option><option value="6"> G</option><option value="7"> H</option></select></nobr> First came the Spaniards losing to the Netherlands, 5-1, on Friday in their opening game. Then came Wednesday’s match, in which a death knell clanged for most of the game’s 90-plus minutes. No one expected the Spanish to show up in Brazil looking so tired and slow. Compared with the Chileans, they looked as if they were in slow motion. 4.<nobr><select name="q3_guess" size="1"> <option value="blank"></option><option value="0"> A</option><option value="1"> B</option><option value="2"> C</option><option value="3"> D</option><option value="4"> E</option><option value="5"> F</option><option value="6"> G</option><option value="7"> H</option></select></nobr><br />
<br />
Seven of Spain’s 23 players competed in the all-Spanish Champions League final a few weeks ago. Ten played in the semis. In the longer view, the team has been playing and playing since winning the 2008 European championship, and several of this World Cup team’s key players — including Casillas, Xabi Alonso, Andrés Iniesta, Cesc Fàbregas and Xavi Hernández — were on that squad. Xavi, the key figure in their midfield is 34; Casillas is 33; Xabi Alonso is 32. After so many miles on their legs and so much pressure to stay on top, their bodies might have had enough of it. No one ever said it’s easy to be the best. 5.<nobr><select name="q3_guess" size="1"> <option value="blank"></option><option value="0"> A</option><option value="1"> B</option><option value="2"> C</option><option value="3"> D</option><option value="4"> E</option><option value="5"> F</option><option value="6"> G</option><option value="7"> H</option></select></nobr><br />
<br />
Afterward, Casillas said he couldn’t explain what happened and apologized to the team’s fans for disappointing them.<br />
“They should know that we gave all we had,” he said. He added, “This squad didn’t deserve to go out like this.”<br />
<br />
6.<nobr><select name="q3_guess" size="1"> <option value="blank"></option><option value="0"> A</option><option value="1"> B</option><option value="2"> C</option><option value="3"> D</option><option value="4"> E</option><option value="5"> F</option><option value="6"> G</option><option value="7"> H</option></select></nobr> But for every amazing athlete and every great team, there comes an end. Sometimes, it comes slowly, the way it did for Michael Jordan when he couldn’t dazzle us with his spectacular play as much as before. And sometimes, it comes fast, like one day waking up to a pair of creaky knees that refuse to do anyone’s bidding.<br />
<br />
Only one thing is certain: Even the best can’t avoid the end.<br />
<br />
The Chilean fans were so riled up before the game that nearly 100 of them stormed one gate of the stadium, broke fences and sprinted into the news media center, knocking over a temporary wall in the chaos. They were led out by the police. Spain’s team went out much more quietly.<br />
<br />
After a few final tries to control the ball, they tripped over themselves and realized their efforts were pointless. 7.<nobr><select name="q3_guess" size="1"> <option value="blank"></option><option value="0"> A</option><option value="1"> B</option><option value="2"> C</option><option value="3"> D</option><option value="4"> E</option><option value="5"> F</option><option value="6"> G</option><option value="7"> H</option></select></nobr>. Spain’s grand squad, which had been a marvel in the sport for so many years, walked off the field in silence.<br />

This is partly due to many jobs being converted into sitting behind a screen, which means people are sitting for much longer today than they did before. <br />
<br />
But the 3.<textarea cols="12" rows="1"></textarea> is, sitting isn't bad. It's sitting for long periods of time without 4.<textarea cols="12" rows="1"></textarea>: that's the killer. In fact, staying in pretty much any position for too long is 5.<textarea cols="11" rows="1"></textarea>.<br />

When we don't move, our risk of cardiovascular disease increases and our blood circulation drops along with the production of enzymes in our bodies that burn fat. A standing desk may be one 7.<textarea cols="12" rows="1"></textarea> to the sitting problem. Standing is not 8.<textarea cols="11" rows="1"></textarea> better than sitting if you do it for a prolonged period of time. Sure you may burn a few more calories but standing for long stretches can lead to things like varicose veins and pressure on the knees.<br />

So it's not whether we sit or stand. It's about what we do when we sit or stand.<br />
<br />
And although intense exercise can be good for your health, the baseline activity required to live a long healthy life doesn't have to be much. Dan Buettner from the National Geographic <br />
notes, you don't have to run marathons or be a professional athlete to add quality years to your life.<br />
<br />
Buettner and his team have been studying areas called Blue Zones, where people are leading the 9.<textarea cols="11" rows="1"></textarea>, healthy lives on the planet. The funny thing is, most of the people in these communities don't exercise in the way that we think of exercise Buettner says. They eat a plant-based diet and have a support network of people they can lean on throughout life, but they don't go to the gym. They don't hop on a treadmill. Instead, they perform regular, low 10.<textarea cols="11" rows="1"></textarea> physical activity because of the way their lives are structured.<br />

As such, I’ve been looking 2.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> to this season of dramas. I feel like I’ve had enough time away that the old clichés might seem new again. <a href="javascript:expandcollapse('subtopic00overbordertxtcloze')"><b>read on</b></a><span class="posthidden" id="subtopic00overbordertxtcloze"><br />
<br />
The first drama to be subbed this Spring is BORDER (thanks to Mister Jordau on <a href="http://d-addicts.com/" target="_blank">d-addicts</a>). In this series a detective wakes up from a coma after 3.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> shot on duty, with the new-found ability that he can see the recently dead. Using this new ability, he investigates murders and tries to helps the departed get the justice they desire. <br />
<br />
When I first read the synopsis, I wondered 4.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> difficult it is to find a murderer when you have the victim helping you. Surely, I thought, you could just ask the victims. Then I thought, it must be 5.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> complicated than that, so I watched it to see. <br />
<br />
I was actually quite surprised when that’s exactly 6.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> happened: the detective asked the deceased who the killer was. And they told him. There wasn’t much actual police work, apart 7.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> some forensics and a bit of questioning. Maybe the lack of a real murder mystery was because it was the opening episode and they had to spend twenty minutes 8.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> explaining the story behind the detective’s ability.<br />
<br />
9.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> that, I enjoyed it. Oguri Shun brings some decent acting to the drama and, 10.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> no one really smiles or shows any real emotion at all, most of the main characters are quite likeable. Assuming that every case won’t be solved as easily as this, I think this drama has promise. <br />
<br />
Not much, but enough to 11.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> me want to see the next couple of episodes 12.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> least.<br />

When he finally got backstage, he was told to wait, and suddenly DeGeneres appeared. <a href="javascript:expandcollapse('subtopic00An-Oscar-for-the-pizza-guytxtcloze')"><b>read on</b></a><span class="posthidden" id="subtopic00An-Oscar-for-the-pizza-guytxtcloze"><br />

She introduced herself to him, and then the host told Martirosyan to follow her, without saying where they were going. She didn’t 3.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> him any instructions on how to behave or what to say, and before he 4.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> it he was in front of the Hollywood elite. <br />
<br />
Born in Armenia, Martirosyan moved to Moscow at age 10. There, he grew 5.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> watching some Hollywood films, including Roberts’ Pretty Woman. Needless to say, he was star struck when he found himself handing her a slice of cheese pizza. “She was actually more beautiful in person,” he said with a laugh. <br />
<br />
And then, just 6.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> quickly as he’d found himself in the spotlight, he was back at work. When he walked into the pizza shop, his employees greeted him with screams. Reporters from local news outlets and paparazzi had also gathered outside the restaurant. <br />
<br />
On Monday morning, Martirosyan filmed an interview with DeGeneres for her talk show in Burbank, while his Facebook page was covered with comments from friends congratulating him 7.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> the Oscars appearance. <br />
<br />
Referring to his journey as the “American Dream Come True!”, a post described how Martirosyan went from delivery driver to franchise owner. In 8.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea>, Martirosyan said, he started out even lower on the food chain at Big Mama’s – 9.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> out fliers on the street on behalf of the business. <br />
<br />
“I always loved to cook and had a real interest 10.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> learning to make pizzas,” he recalled. “So I became a cook, and then a manager, and then an owner. Business wasn’t that good – it wasn’t that clean when we came, 11.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> I started to clean everything up and grow the business.” <br />
<br />
As for how all the attention from the Oscars would affect sales, Martirosyan said he was trying not to get ahead of himself. <br />
“Of 12.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea>, extra orders are very good,” he said. “But I’m very calm. I’m not going crazy now. I’m really chill. This is just another, regular busy day.” <br />

After being an Olympic sailor and model, he discovered he had a passion for photography, 1.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> led to him doing work with big name companies 2.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> Levi's, Reebok, DKNY, Johnnie Walker and Axe Deodorant "to name a few". <a href="javascript:expandcollapse('subtopic00Drive-intxtcloze')"><b>read on</b></a><span class="posthidden" id="subtopic00Drive-intxtcloze"> <br />

In addition to his work 3.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> a photographer, Peter’s also making a name 4.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> himself with the modeling and photography tips he’s giving 5.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> via his <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/peterhurleyphoto" target="_blank">YouTube</a> account. <br />
<br />
Following on the heels of Tyra Banks’ “ smize technique,” Peter’s latest lesson in 6.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> to look better in pictures is with something he calls “squinching.” He calls it his “most incredible tip for looking more photogenic in a camera.” It involves squinting a little bit, and pinching your lower eye lid a lot. 7.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> help him illustrate his point, he 8.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> his friend demonstrate it.<br />
<br />
That maybe doesn’t look that spectacular, until his friend kept his eyes more open.<br />
So yeah, a noticeable difference. He goes 9.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> to give a bunch of different examples, over a variety of different races and genders to prove that this method can be used 10.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> anyone. His main point of emphasis is that by “squinching” in photographs, you will look more confident and thus, better looking in your pictures.<br />
<br />
As to whether you think squinchers actually look better or not, well, that’s up to you. And, also, it seems a lot of it has to 11.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> with whether the subject is smiling or not. But 12.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> not give it a try? Give it a whirl. See what happens. Squinch on.<br />

A Pre-K teacher in Buffalo, NY, sent a controversial note to parents about some of their children. It was written by hand and 1.<textarea cols="14" rows="1"></textarea> to miss.
Kimberly Wells, who found it in her granddaughter's 2.<textarea cols="14" rows="1"></textarea>, was shocked to read the note which said the teacher found it difficult to be 3.<textarea cols="14" rows="1"></textarea> some of the children because of <i>unpleasant smells</i>. <a href="javascript:expandcollapse('subtopic010PreKteacherans')"></a><a href="javascript:expandcollapse('subtopic010PreKteacher')"><b>read on</b></a><span class="posthidden" id="subtopic010PreKteacher">

the standard.com.hk" />In many current e-learning systems, students can submit a digital copy of their homework online. 1.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> it is not easy for teachers to mark and write feedback on it. Because they are required to either print 2.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> the assignment and mark the paper copy, 3.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> just give simple, overall text-based feedback in the "comments" field of the homework. <a href="javascript:expandcollapse('subtopic00wiltonfoxcloze')"><b>read on</b></a><span class="posthidden" id="subtopic00wiltonfoxcloze"><br />
<br />
The iClass Assessment is a pen-based assessment marking solution 4.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> developed by the University of Hong Kong's e-Learning Technology Development Laboratory. Students submit 5.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> homework through the web to a cloud server. Then teachers mark the homework with an e-pen directly on a tablet PC, circle mistakes and highlight the good points, as conveniently as 6.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> they were marking a hard copy. <br />
<br />
An electronic sticker album is also available. Teachers can also pick some e-stickers, 7.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> as standard answers, comments and "well done" stamps. It can simplify writing feedback and encourage teachers to give in-depth comments to students. Using a simple click, this can be easily given 8.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> to the student after the assessment has 9.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> completed. <br />
<br />
Pen-based markings can provide a more convenient and in-depth analysis of the student's strengths and weaknesses. In this manner the quality of assessment for learning can be greatly improved. 10.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> addition, a teacher's heavy workload, 11.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> has become a big problem in recent years, will soon be a thing of the past. <br />
<br />
Marking hard copy affects not only affects teaching quality but also the quality of life of the teachers. Taking home thick piles of work 12.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> marking will no longer have to be a teacher's nightmare. <br />

No deal has been done, but Beckham is keen to own a club in the US and it is thought he has settled 2.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> Miami as the destination for his side. <a href="javascript:expandcollapse('subtopic00DavidBeckhamintxtcloze')"><b>read on</b></a><span class="posthidden" id="subtopic00DavidBeckhamintxtcloze"> <br />

Beckham has an option to buy a franchise for $25million, although he faces strong competition from around the world 3.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> he is to own an MLS club. <br />
<br />
The option 4.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> becoming an owner of a club at a reduced rate was included in David Beckham's contract with LA Galaxy in 2007, 5.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> an incentive to 6.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> football in America at that time. <br />

The MLS still has to 9.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> Beckham permission to make Miami the location of the franchise but it is thought that former England captain leads the pack 10.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> to what he has done for football in America, and because he wants to start a team in Miami. <br />
<br />
There are currently 19 teams in the MLS, but by 2020 there could be 24 teams, and Beckham is currently looking for investment. The $25million is simply an 'expansion fee' charged 11.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> the MLS. But Beckham would need to raise hundreds of millions of dollars to cover the costs involved, including putting 12.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> a squad of players and building a stadium. <br />

But why lie to researchers?<br />
After all, the man or woman from the Office for National Statistics or Ipsos Mori can't order you to go on a diet or lay off the wine. It is a question that has concerned social 2.<textarea cols="13" rows="1"></textarea> for decades. They even have a name for it - The Social Desirability Bias.</td><td>1.understand<br />

"People respond to surveys in the way they think they ought to. It is otherwise known as 3.<textarea cols="12" rows="1"></textarea>," says Kate Fox, an alcohol and drinking culture expert who has done research for both the government and the drinks industry. "People also fool themselves about how much they drink, but it applies to most surveys, which is why one has to use other methods to really find out what is going on."<br />
<br />
It is a particular problem when it comes to "sins" such as alcohol and food. Britain is one of a 4.<textarea cols="12" rows="1"></textarea> of nations - including the US - that has a mixed attitude to drinking", says Fox. "We have a moral 5.<textarea cols="12" rows="1"></textarea> with alcohol. It is a bit of a 6.<textarea cols="12" rows="1"></textarea> fruit." In countries with an "integrated drinking culture", such as more Latin nations, drinking is a "morally neutral issue, only slightly more controversial than coffee and tea".<br />
<br />
It is easy to see why people would want to make themselves look good - even to a researcher they have just met. But what about when the researcher leaves the room? Or hands them a separate 7.<textarea cols="11" rows="1"></textarea> to be filled in privately? They're all ways used by researchers to try and balance out the Social Desirability Bias.<br />
<br />
"You still want to project a positive image of yourself even if the survey is anonymous," says Bobby Duffy, 8.<textarea cols="11" rows="1"></textarea> director of Ipsos Mori's Social Research Institute. The gap between the amount of alcohol being sold in the UK and the amount people said they were drinking, was first observed in the 1980s, he says.<br />
<br />
The gap between perception and 9.<textarea cols="11" rows="1"></textarea> reality might be particularly wide in the UK, he suggests. 10.<textarea cols="11" rows="1"></textarea> of healthy eating in the UK is among the highest in Europe, yet the country also has the highest obesity rates. The key, says Duffy, is to view survey results as part of a bigger picture - and, he stresses, it is still possible to track overall social trends from self-reported surveys.<br />

I'm trying to make out, among the echo of the wind and the noise from the cars that 3.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> time to time drive along the road, the sounds of silbo gomero or Gomeran whistle; an ancient language the locals have assured me is still 4.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> use.<a href="javascript:expandcollapse('subtopic00Silbogomerotxtcloze')"><b> read on</b></a><span class="posthidden" id="subtopic00Silbogomerotxtcloze"><br />
This method of communication, in 5.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> the Spanish language is replaced by two whistled vowels and four consonants, has the ability to travel up to two miles (3.2km), 6.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> further and with less effort than shouting. There are no certainties about its origins. It is known that when the first European settlers arrived at La Gomera in the 15th Century, the inhabitants of the island - of North African origin - communicated 7.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> whistles. Some locals recall its widespread use in the 1940s and 50s.<br />
<br />
"In the old days, when the mountain 8.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> fire, something that happens quite frequently in the island, the Guardia Civil came to pick us up," says Lino Rodriguez, an old whistler with a cracked smoking voice.<br />
<br />
"And 9.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> matter what we were doing, they put us in a truck and drove us to put out the fire. So, to avoid them, we passed a message between us whistling: 'You have to hide, the Guardia Civil is coming!'. And 10.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> they didn't whistle, they didn't understand what we were saying and couldn't find us."<br />
<br />
The council and the mayors were paid to put out the fires but would not pay any locals who helped, he explains.<br />
<br />
By the 1970s and 80s, there were only a few whistlers remaining, but at the end of the 90s there was renewed interest in silbo, in part 11.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> to an initiative to make it a compulsory subject at primary school.<br />
<br />
For Fernando Mendez, minister of tourism of La Gomera, whistling is crucial to the island's tourism industry. Archaeologist Hernandez Marrero agrees that preservation is important, because it defines the identity of the Gomerans. But he fears that it risks becoming a cliche, 12.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> the flower necklaces given to tourists in Hawaii.<br />

The thinking is that the days are too full for young children under the current system and that Wednesday free time could be put to more 4.<textarea cols="12" rows="1"></textarea> use.<br />

His education minister, Vincent Peillon, will decide this month how to carry out the reform. A panel of experts will present their 5.<textarea cols="12" rows="1"></textarea> on Friday, and the president is expected to address the issue on Tuesday.<br />

The Education Ministry has proposed more organised extracurricular activities like sports, theatre and art to replace the relatively free-form time children now have after school. Peter Gumbel, a British journalist who has lived in France since 2002 and written a book about the country's education system, said the 9.<textarea cols="11" rows="1"></textarea> of the school day is only part of the problem.<br />

Even the clothes he wears the day we meet are not new, and were part of his wardrobe before the show. So 8.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea>, he's spent $200,000 (£124,000) of his winnings. Sushil says the money has changed him in simple and small ways. "Since I won, a lot of people started writing letters to me asking for money, to buy land, to solve their problems, to pay for operations, their house, their children's wedding." <br />
<br />
As Sushil's win was watched by 27 million Indians, he definitely has celebrity status. "Now I go to any part of the country and people recognise me and… want to get pictures 12.<textarea cols="9" rows="1"></textarea> with me and get my autograph. It's a very good feeling," he says.<br />

<br />
1.<nobr><select size="1" name="q3_guess"> <option value="blank"></option><option value="0"> A</option><option value="1"> B</option><option value="2"> C</option><option value="3"> D</option><option value="4"> E</option><option value="5"> F</option><option value="6"> G</option><option value="7"> H</option></select></nobr>. "We're looking at whether we can do online examinations, so the student doesn't have to come in to a hall, they just need to be sitting in front of their computer at a particular time when the exam is released to their computer," says Prof Taylor, chair of the Open University's academic conduct group.<a href="javascript:expandcollapse('subtopic00subtopic010onlinestudentscheatingtxt')"><b> read on</b></a><span class="posthidden" id="subtopic00subtopic010onlinestudentscheatingtxt"><span style="font-size:x-small;"><br />
<br />
Choose from A-H, there is one extra.<br />
A Prof Taylor says he would expect such technology to be in place within the next five years<br />
B However, taking exams at school is without doubt a traditonal part of school-life<br />
C An important attraction of online courses is that students can study where and when they want<br />
D Students really like the instant feedback of online testing<br />
E The idea of people bringing notes up their sleeves remains a problem<br />
F There is research suggesting it really works<br />
G For instance, there are disputes among this global student body over British or American spelling<br />
H And there isn't any technology that can judge whether an essay has really connected with a question</span><br />
<br />
"There are various ways you can identify a person," says Prof Taylor. "One system we looked at meant that you had to type in a particular phrase - and the rate and the particular way you type is effectively a signature of the individual," says Martin Bean Open University vice chancellor. These are not distant-horizon ideas. 2. <nobr><select size="1" name="q3_guess"> <option value="blank"></option><option value="0"> A</option><option value="1"> B</option><option value="2"> C</option><option value="3"> D</option><option value="4"> E</option><option value="5"> F</option><option value="6"> G</option><option value="7"> H</option></select></nobr>. He also says that there is no reason to think more people would necessarily cheat online. "Let's face it, in a large examination hall, each individual student isn't going to be closely watched. 3. <nobr><select size="1" name="q3_guess"> <option value="blank"></option><option value="0"> A</option><option value="1"> B</option><option value="2"> C</option><option value="3"> D</option><option value="4"> E</option><option value="5"> F</option><option value="6"> G</option><option value="7"> H</option></select></nobr>."<br />
<br />
EdX, an online university project set up earlier this year by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard, wants to make more use of the exam hall rather than less. 4. <nobr><select size="1" name="q3_guess"> <option value="blank"></option><option value="0"> A</option><option value="1"> B</option><option value="2"> C</option><option value="3"> D</option><option value="4"> E</option><option value="5"> F</option><option value="6"> G</option><option value="7"> H</option></select></nobr>, says edX's first president, Anant Agarwal. And interactive, multimedia online lectures make the old-style lectures look less effective. But this volume of testing depends on automated marking - and will mean a limit on the range of subjects and type of questions that can be examined. <br />
<br />
Coursera's co-founder Daphne Koller says trying to find a way to assess so many students is "part of the learning process". She says automatic marking can generate a score or a grade, but students want human feedback. 5. <nobr><select size="1" name="q3_guess"> <option value="blank"></option><option value="0"> A</option><option value="1"> B</option><option value="2"> C</option><option value="3"> D</option><option value="4"> E</option><option value="5"> F</option><option value="6"> G</option><option value="7"> H</option></select></nobr>.<br />
<br />
Coursera has been experimenting with peer assessment, where students grade each others' work, following guidelines set by the teacher. This allows for the marking capacity to grow with the class size - but it also depends on the reliability of fellow students. These online courses are also being discussed online - and blogs from students refer to disagreements over marking. 6. <nobr><select size="1" name="q3_guess"> <option value="blank"></option><option value="0"> A</option><option value="1"> B</option><option value="2"> C</option><option value="3"> D</option><option value="4"> E</option><option value="5"> F</option><option value="6"> G</option><option value="7"> H</option></select></nobr>.<br />
<br />
This brings the debate back to an old fashioned and low-tech form of preventing cheating. The "honour code" - or should that be "honor code" - is an ethical approach, based on a promise to maintain academic honesty. 7. <nobr><select size="1" name="q3_guess"> <option value="blank"></option><option value="0"> A</option><option value="1"> B</option><option value="2"> C</option><option value="3"> D</option><option value="4"> E</option><option value="5"> F</option><option value="6"> G</option><option value="7"> H</option></select></nobr>. Institutions with such a code have a lower level of cheating.<br />
<br />
Martin Bean, vice chancellor of the Open University, said: "There is no doubt that this is the 'web moment' for higher education and a battle is shaping up for growing student numbers on global courses online, with some able to grow large numbers of students very quickly. However this is a battle which will be about brands and the market ability of the providers but also, crucially, about quality of teaching and credibility."<br />
